Some torches you carry forever. And others you carry until the right bearer comes along to help them burn all the brighter.
For example:
In 1934, Women’s Club of Sweetwater County initiated the “Milk Fund”. A fund that helped undernourished children in the local school systems get milk and other nutrition through the school to assist in their learning and development. 37 years later the Milk Fund’s function was taken over by the dedicated school staff, and the club set the project aside.
And in 1937, Women’s Club of Sweetwater County started a Story Hour at the public library to encourage a love of reading and learning in the children in our community. After years under the club’s direction, this program was taken over by the talented children’s librarians of the Sweetwater County Library System and continues today as the ever-popular Story Time our children have loved for generations.
75 years ago, our club saw a need in our community for no-cost, temporary medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, crutches, and more, for those suffering from injuries or temporary disabilities. For three quarters of a century our dedicated members have maintained the Lending Closet with the generous help of the city of Rock Springs.
But now, as with the Milk Fund and Story Hour, it is time for this club program to pass into the hands of those who can take it even farther.
Beginning on April 13th, 2026 the Lending Closet will be passing into the hands of Justina Heavin and her dedicated team at Cornerstone Caregiving. As a group of professionals who provide expert, personalized, in-home care to seniors and those suffering from disability, Cornerstone Caregiving are the perfect team to take over the stewardship of the Lending Closet.
Their expertise will not only help them to make sure that each person who comes to the Lending Closet for free equipment gets just what they need. They are also in a position to know who in our community is most in need of the Lending Closet’s services, and to insure that the equipment is maintained to professional standards.
Our club is proud to have started this program and to have stewarded it through all these years of service. Now, we are just as proud to pass the legacy on to a qualified group of passionate people who can carry it through its next decades and grow it even further than we ever could have.
Thank you for taking on the stewardship of this important program, Justina and the Cornerstone Caregiving team. May this torch burn brighter than ever in your care.
